The Journey

Gingerbread in January? The Answer is, Yes!!

It’s hard to believe that we are almost two weeks into 2023 already! Every year, I find myself reflecting around this time on all the hustle and bustle of the holidays. How quickly it begins and how quickly it comes to an end. The time period for creating dishes “holiday” flavors is so short and chaotic, that I barely had a chance to make anything last month.

I love baking and using the holiday flavors: peppermint, pumpkin spice, gingerbread, apple, cranberry, and walnut, just to name a few. So, I decided to make this delicious looking gingerbread cake in January. Don’t tell the food police!

A Return to the Ina Project

Earlier this week, I found myself on Ina Garten’s website. I can’t recall exactly why I was there but nevertheless, I was lost in the Ina’s World tab for a little while. I noticed the link to the cookbook index and wondered if it was finally updated to include the recipes from Ina’s most recent book, Go-To Dinners.

Sure enough, it was!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies to Start the New Year

Happy New Year!!

Did you stay up to watch the ball drop? I didn’t. I tried, but I didn’t make it this year. I was too tired from…not doing all that much actually. On New Year’s Eve, the chemist bf and I went to see the new Avatar movie, got Chinese take-out, and spent some time watching repeats of RuPaul’s Drag Race (the new season is starting very soon). But, I was itching to get one last bake in before the new year. Plus, I needed an “excuse” to try out my new stand mixer, right?

A More Challenging Cake Attempt

A few weeks ago I wrote about how I purchased a new cookbook. This cookbook is one that I was excited to finally purchase and it’s surely one to take my baking skills to the next level. That couldn’t be more true than when I attempted one of the most challenging cakes in the book, and of my life: the French Classic Genoise.

Top 5 Most Popular Posts of 2022

What a year it has been for this tiny little blog! I reached over 55,00 views and had one post that really, really took off. For a few months I thought I had finally “made it” in the blogging world. Even though it’s been over two years since I started this little hobby of mine.

As I did last year, I decided to write a post covering my most popular posts of the year, regardless of when they were published. So here it goes!

Looking Back on the Year 2022

Wow! Can you believe it’s almost time for the new year?? Wasn’t January just last week?

Anyway, I decided to take some time this December and reflect on how things went on the blog this year. Here is my 2022 Year in Review!

December is Here Already?!?!

Wow! What a few whirlwind weeks I’ve been in!

I can’t believe that we are already in the first full week of December. The Holidays are in full swing and Christmas is only two and a half weeks away.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been baking as much as I thought I would be over the last couple of weeks. But this week I am working on developing a recipe for Peppermint Brownies that I hope to share with you all sometime next week, just in time for the holidays.

So far, the brownies have been well received, but I just want to keep tweaking them a little bit. I am planning to debut them at a holiday party this Saturday. That will be the ultimate taste test.

A New Book on My Shelf…

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I decided to take advantage of the time off and spend some time shopping. Yes, I even went shopping on Black Friday. But it was in the afternoon, and the stores weren’t any busier than a normal weekend. I was so exhausted from the food that I couldn’t bring myself to bake anything over the weekend. The Pumpkin Banana Mousse Tart was a hit for Thanksgiving, though this time around, the mousse texture wasn’t exactly there.

I had been feeling in a bit of “funk” for the last couple of weeks. I’m not sure what was causing it. But I did know something that would help me snap out of it, so to speak.

Top Thanksgiving Dessert Options

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Can you believe it? Seems strange to me. It’s almost like it snuck up on us, right? This year, we are doing a much smaller Thanksgiving celebration and, officially, it’s on Saturday, not Thursday. But, I’m still tasked with making dessert and currently in the process of narrowing down what I should make.
